View of Toledo, El Greco, 1540.
I sound like an infidel, but I never really got El Greco. I know he’s important, but the sharpness and drama his reputation is built on never really effected me. I spent a while at the Met yesterday looking at artists I don’t normally really look at.
I love the sky in this painting. It’s dramatic but subtle. The clouds look like they’re moving at different speeds, and I can feel time passing in the painting. It’s easily seen through the doorway, and even three galleries away, it has the same resonance.
